Title: An interesting trading idea
Post by: cmigs on June 16, 2009, 06:37:42 PM
Just saw this on a Damien Rice forum:

http://eskimofriends.com/forum/showpost.php?p=346342&postcount=26

Basically, the suggestion is to trade hard drives full of shows, as opposed to stray shows (I think Dead fans may have done this as well). Apparently you can fit an entire archive of Damien shows on an HD under 160gb, which is obviously not true of the Crows, but I thought it was intriguing and maybe worth pursuing. Could make it easier to spread the seeding burden on old shows.

I thought of this a while back, whilst losing a couple of pounds worth of DVD isn't a big loss, losing this could be a lot more expensive, also the postal service aren't always known for being gentle

I think you'd have to be a bit careful in packing, but yeah, that's a concern.

the prices on 1TB externals have come way down. You could probably fit a decent crows collection on there. I don't think shipping would be a problem. Some syrofoam peanuts and a priority box should do the trick.

Yeah, they're down to about $100 for a 1TB external.

I know I would... there's a lot of time to fill in between Crows tours.

gigs as in gigabytes or gigs as in shows :D

I personally listen to most of my shows in the car. So, I would need cd's to play them, but I wouldn't be surprised if someday you could just plug your hard drive into your stereo unit and select songs on the touch screen.

Now are we talking .flac files or .wav files (or shall I even dare to say mp3 files)?
Title: An interesting trading idea
Post by: cmigs on June 17, 2009, 09:29:04 PM
I would guess .flac, although if something were only available in .mp3 I personally wouldn't have a problem with it. There could also be DVD files.

As you note, you'd have to burn to CD if you wanted those (although, Bryan does your car allow you to plug in a music player, like an iPod? There's plenty of music players now that play .flac files).

Haha, gigabytes... I have no idea what a pretty complete collection might total.

I have a Cowon iAudio X5. I think some other Cowon players also play FLAC. I know there's others out there but haven't been looking too hard.

Also, there's an open source firmware program for portable music players called Rockbox that I haven't tried yet.

for years i've had external hard drives and i'm a big fan of them...however i just had two external hd's recently bite it. one was able to have the info recovered at the local shop. the other one may not fare so well. while these instances are rare - it's killing me over the amount of crows stuff i will have lost if the data can't be recovered on the one hd.

Been thinking about what the structure might be for this. Optimally, we'd start with someone who has a pretty complete collection. The group seems to fall into three main clusters - the Dutch, the Brits, and the Americans (who are clustered mostly on the east coast, with some of y'all in the midwest). So if three people sent the original person a hard drive, and we had one in each region, that person could spread around their region (saving us all on shipping). Conceivably, if we wanted to be really ordered, we could do a vine (or more accurately three vines, one for each area).

Also, if end up doing this, I promise I'll produce a complete history of the Mercury "Love and Addiction" alt. :)

Unfortunately most of my collection is on cd-r - so I don't know how complete mine is - unless I rip everything to my new external. Then I would have to see if my external that bit it can be saved because that one had a boatload of stuff on it. If this comes to fruition count me in as one of those east coast Americans.
Title: An interesting trading idea
Post by: philjw on June 18, 2009, 11:30:24 PM
I'd be up for this as well (another East Coast American) and had even suggested something like this a while back, albeit to limited response.  I have most of the available lossless Crows stuff, but not a lot of the circulating lossy-only shows.  I also have an enormous U2 collection.  I really have to do some organization before I start trading on any massive scale, however, as my files are currently a bit of a disaster and also spread over multiple hard drives and backup discs.

In any case, I would advise anyone contemplating this to backup anything sent through the mail as hard drives do fail! (hope your's is ok, Jim!)  I always try to keep all of my data saved in at least two locations, be it a CD/DVD and HD, two HDs, etc. even if they're just sitting at home.  The mail handling process adds another level of risk.  Also, some hard drives are designed to be "portable" and are usually smaller.  I'd think that with some good packaging, they'd survive several shipments without a problem.

Re: size of HDs - took a look at the Western Digital Passport today, and that thing is tiny. Would cost as much to ship as a stack of CDs.

Bumping this old post because I still think this would be a good idea. Shit, I'd buy the hard drive if someone with a complete and organized collection would populate it.

I'd also happily contribute to the cost of a hard drive. I've never gone down the path of digitalising my entire CC collection, seems like a lot of work to start from scratch.
Title: Re: An interesting trading idea
Post by: cmigs on January 07, 2013, 04:22:57 PM
Yeah, I'm hoping that someone has one that's mostly digitized and well-organized. If not, a few of us could put in some work, using Simon's spreadsheet, to organize our collections and get a complete one. I actually think I have a pretty good percentage of the stuff, and most of my collection is digitized, it's just scattered on hard drives and not organized.

I had talked over PM about this idea with Bob (OssoBear) a while ago, but he hasn't been around much as of late.
Title: Re: An interesting trading idea
Post by: philjw on January 20, 2013, 04:58:46 AM
I haven't been around much lately, but this sounds like a good idea.  My collection is not complete, but it is relatively organized, and includes almost all of the lossless stuff in common circulation (I think).  I'd have to re-rip some DVDs, but all of the music is in flac/shn.  I'd be happy to help in this effort, particularly, if others could fill the holes for me ;)
Title: Re: An interesting trading idea
Post by: cmigs on January 20, 2013, 05:17:04 PM
Okay, maybe we should pull up Simon's spreadsheet and start seeing where we're at and what holes we have.

I used to have a version of Simon's spreadsheet that I turned into a checklist to track my collection, but I can't seem to find it right now.  Will look harder for it sometime this week.

I did, too. Think it's on an old laptop. I think it was current through... 2009 or so? Whatever year Simon stopped updating it.
Title: Re: An interesting trading idea

Found my spreadsheet!  Bad news is that it likely makes sense only to me and it hasn't been updated since 2009 or so.  That said, I think I can clean it up, which is actually a good opportunity to check it against my hard drive archives anyway. I'm pretty busy these days, but I'm going to try to get through this in the next few weeks.  Then I'll share a list of what I have and what I believe I'm missing.

Phil - I feel fairly confident I have everything that has circulated since 2009.

Post by: philjw on January 29, 2013, 11:22:03 AM
I'm really glad I stumbled across this thread again.  Even if nothing comes of the idea, the process of going back through my collection is reminding me of a lot of great shows. I've been listening to nothing but live Counting Crows for the past few days... I'm also finding that my collection wasn't as organized as I'd thought, but that's getting sorted out now. I think I'll have a pretty decent base to start with, and then we can use Simon's list and others' collections to identify and fill holes. If others are seriously interested, I'll start posting lists of what I have and what I think I'm missing.

Yeah, Geoff put a lot of effort into posting so many of the lossy shows.  Unfortunately, I fell behind in downloading them, and then Megaupload got shut down...  I know he posted some more using other services, but I really wasn't around on the site very much for the past couple of years and a lot of those links appear to be dead now as well.  In any case, such a great community here.  Too bad we can't get that tracker working again :-/

Phil said on the other thread (one of several) that you posted about the show in that he'd upload it when he could. And the other places you posted it (especially the thread for the original torrent for the show) were appropriate places to ask about a show. But we're doing something completely different here, trying to build a master database of Counting Crows shows.

well youre just not very nice....just tryin to find a show here....    :P

Chris is not being unkind, he's just pointing out you'd already found the appropriate place to post your request. And he's right, you had. Hope you're able to grab it.

Hopefully that's the end of that; I'll share the Columbus show when I can. For now, finishing up my digital organization efforts...  This is the rest of the audio, which includes the "SNSM-era" sheet from Simon as well as everything else through the present (i.e., mid-2007 through 2012).  I'm probably going to need help figuring out what I'm missing, as I'm sure stuff slipped by me, particularly during the 2009-2011 time frame.

In case anyone's curious, all of that takes up only about 335GB.  Audio only, of course.  Point being, a vine or something similar would work with a single relatively cheap hard drive.  Not sure if anyone is even interested based on the lack of feedback here, but in any case I'm glad to have gotten my collection in order  :)

I would be interested in participating, but i have maybe 1% of the list here, so I wouldn't be able to add to this at all. I just realized...I have an uncirculated recording from a Sarnia, Ontario show in 2009. I will work on finding a way to upload it. It's not the best quality but it's also not the worse, the only downfall is the occasional screaming fan. If this ever gets off the ground and money is needed for a hard drive I would be interested in getting my hands on this and chipping in for a hard drive.

There are a few shows on your missing list that i have but i will wait to see if Chris has them before i upload anything since they''re mostly lossy and C quality.
I'm not a completist , i only download a show if i like the setlist and have the time to listen to it,most of my shows are on CD not on my PC.And a bunch on DVD's that i haven't organised yet.

Sorry but yeah, he was, but whatever, free country......  iposted where I saw the show mentioned since a lot of these threads are old and no ones been on them for years, so I posted in more than one place, like I mentioned, where I saw the show, in case no one ever saw the other requests.... Not sure how its not appropriate, I mean why bother making a list and collecting shows for trading if you're not gonna share? I used to trade all the time and wouldn't mind someone asking me, on any thread.... Good luck to u too though....

Let me correct you: this is not a "free country". There are rules to keep everything as organized as possible. Each post belongs on its respective thread - that way we can stay on topic and not get everything mixed up.

I'll try and go through this weekend - been slammed by work. I also know some of my 2009-2010 stuff is on a hard drive that I don't have with me but that I can retrieve.

And Kruykster - a) an unreleased show is awesome and b) the hope would be that we could circulate the hard drive to people to get the collection out there. Not trying to hoard.

Dutchie, thanks for the offer. Will let you know. I'm not the type to listen to many C quality shows (other than trying to decipher if there are interesting new alts in them), but I do think it would be good to have everything together.

Phil - I'm blocked at work, but check bt.etree for the 24 bit you were looking for. I think its still there.

Thanks, Chris.  No real hurry.  I just happened to have some down time and plowed through.  I may try to do the video stuff as well, as most of it is already sitting on various drives.  Dutchie, thanks for the offer; Kruykster, you're welcome to participate, and we'd love to hear that uncirculated recording.

Yeah, a pretty good chunk of my video is digitized. A few things were burned to disc and not kept digital; but again, hopefully our overlap is such that we have all/most covered.

i can probably assist with some of the DVD's if no-one has existing files. As I had limited capacity when I was seeding most DVD's, I tended to delete them once they'd been seeded. If it gets to the point where some redigitalisation of CC dvd's is needed, i can probably help fill the gaps (just have to remember how to do it!).

Virtually all of my DVDs live on hard drives somewhere; it's just a matter of consolidating and organizing, which is probably a good idea anyway. I'll post a list of what I have in the next few days.

no probs Phil. I think I have a few that are still yet to be shared as well so once you've got the list, i'm happy to work with you exclusively and we'll plug the gaps.

My video stuff, minus a bunch of random you tube captures, etc.  Not really sure what all I'm missing, but I know there's a lot more out there.  Also not sure if some of this stuff might exist in better formats.

Yeah, wasn't it supposed to air on Palladium or something like that?  I remember waiting to seed the webstream-capture DVD because a better source was--like so many things counting crows--just around the corner...

Thanks, Chris.  I do feel your pain.  I will say that life has been better at my significantly smaller Portland firm than when I was in NY or DC, but still chained to the billable hour  :(

Getting organized is like a treasure hunt. Just found a bunch of radio show CDs that I completely forgot I owned... Not sure if they've all been circulated or not, but these are legit pre-FM discs with cue sheets.
MediaAmerica - Couting Crows Up Close (96-50) (late 1996, RTS launch) (maybe the 1996-10-16 show on Simon's list?)
ABC Radio Networks - Live from Irving Plaza 7-13-2002 (Air Date July 19-28 2002) (I already seeded this one here)
Westwood One - Off the Record Special (97-15) (for broadcast week of April 7, 1997) (minimal Adam quotes + album tracks)
Westwood One - Off the Record Special (96-50) (for broacast week of Dec 9, 1996) (minimal Adam quotes + album tracks)
Westwood One - In Concert (95-26) (for broadcast week of June 19, 1995) (from 1994-08-19 St. Dennis concert)
Westwood One - In Concert (94-16) for broadcast week of April 11, 1994) (from 1993-10-02 Irvine Meadows concert)

Not sure those last 2 circulate as pre-FMs. And even if they do, there's a good chance most people don't have it.

And I have the following comps not on Phi's list:

Live Forever
Distances Between Yesterday and Now
Waterfall of Frowns (quite a title!)
Candy Coated
Acoustic in Europe
We're Only Love
Turn Up the Radio
Live on Letterman

I think there's also some stray mp3s and stuff, like from CKKL and the like, that weren't on Simon's list.

We'll make it happen.  I've not been on the site in a while due to other life obligations, but this idea is worth it.  I also haven't been keeping up with any of the new boots, so I'll have to get on top of that one of these days as well.

Phil - pretty sure I'm completely up to date on the new ones.

This is an interesting idea. I had not really thought of trading HD's.

So to be clear, the person A would ship off their HD (carefully protected, of course) and then when person B got it, they would copy everything off of it and then mail the HD back?

That is an interesting thought.  There are various risks there (depending on who you are trading with, whether that person would be a jerk and delete everything (or simply MOVE files, rather than copy).

I love the idea though.  While I don't have any Crows shows (Although I aspire to have everything from their debut tour - A&EA - audio wise) I have a lot of bootlegs of hip hop stuff (tons of D'Angelo and The Roots stuff as well), so if anyone wanted to do a trade where they send a HD to me...I copy off some shows and then I copy over a bunch of my own stuff that you picked out, and then ship it back...that could work.

Yeah, I've done it with Damien Rice shows a while back - there were a few hiccups there, but not the end of the world. I have to get back to work on this sometime soon...

Might be cheaper to do it with thumbdrives, depending on how much media is being transferred.  Size wise, you're capped at a maximum of 128GB per thumbdrive, and I would imagine that the transfer speed would be lower than an external WD or Seagate or whatever.

I have a 64GB Transcend Flashdrive and a 1TB WD MyPassport, but that's my only HD.  So I'd probably have to pick up a spare HD to put all the boots on and then trade that and pray it comes back. ha ha.

I have a 1TB HD we can use and a 2TB HD if needed.

Oh, we'd definitely need at least a 1TB hard drive for it. I have one ready.

No one is offering right now because the collection has not been built. I'll take the blame - been busy the last few months and have also just procrastinated.

I think the plan is for me to get it going and then for Rob and Phil to fill in the gaps, although we may need to ask others to help out if there are shows we all are missing (very few, from the looks of it).

I shall use your interest as extra inspiration to actually do this and not just talk about it. :)

Impressive collections of live recordings gents.  The idea of a single hard drive for everything sounds great.  Let me know if I can assist anywhere.  I have usually been asked for remastering skills on shows.  But I can definitely drag and drop.  (files that is)  Keep me posted as the definitive collection is built.

Did this idea ever come to fruition? I am an decade+ old CC fan and have never been able to come across much of those videos listed in the topic. Is there any way to get some of them still? I'd love anyone who could point me in the correct direction.  :-X

We never did put this together.

Most of the video mentioned in this thread is available on Youtube (much of it on my channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUx27eypQ7az_XcbrGerD7Q).
