Title: Chris' Video Vault
Post by: cmigs on August 05, 2017, 05:42:47 PM
An ongoing series of videos, posted to Youtube, sharing the wealth of video footage traded on Crowstown over the years.

Chris' Video Vault #1
Rome, April 28, 1994

Classic early show, best circulating video version. One of my favorite performances of Sullivan Street... the way Adam just collapses at the end... wow.
Thanks to Simon Cauchi (https://www.facebook.com/simon.cauchi?fref=mentions) for sharing this at CrowsTown back in the day.

Chris' Video Vault #2
A whole show from the RTS tour in Minneapolis. It's a fan shot video, from 1997, so bear that in mind when thinking about the quality. Given that, it's very watchable.
This was pretty rare video for a long time, until Rob shared it a few years back.
Enjoy.

A second one today. Christopher Dilworth (https://www.facebook.com/chris.dilworth.902?fref=mentions) had included this in his compilation, but the source on Youtube before only had Anna Begins, and the audio was a bit dodgy. This has both Anna Begins and Round Here, and the sound quality is a significant upgrade. Pretty awesome vocal on Round Here.

Okay, what was supposed to be Video Vault #4 has a copyright claim against it, so instead, here's a piece of a show from August 2001 in Austin. Lots of August stuff (great Round Here with Ryan Adams' Come Pick Me Up alts), and some of the Hard Candy songs a year before their release. Enjoy.
This was shared, and I believe taped, by Woody the French. If he's out here, thanks buddy.

A 2009 show from St. Louis. Taped from the big screen at the show, so you're getting nice camera angles. Interesting setlist, too, with some stuff that's really become uncommon over the last few years. Thanks to the taper.

I really love this one. The Crows' 2008 performance on Soundstage replayed on Palladium all the time back in the day, to the point where I probably knew all the banter at one point. Great performance of most of SNSM (which I think has become a slightly underrated record).

A complete show from a run in London '04. Love the setlist, which includes Round Here, Elisabeth, and Rain King - Elisabeth has the Black Sun alts, which are among my favorites. Rain King has Thunder Road and Round Here has Raining in Baltimore. Picture is pretty solid, and the audio is good (although there's some talkers near the taper, the bastards).

Chris' Video Vault #9
A DirecTV broadcast of a chunk of a show from Chicago in 2004 (as well as, oddly, stray songs from other bands mixed in). Adam was deep into "I only wear Cal shirts and black sweatpants" phase. Good performance - I'm pretty fond of this era (maybe because the setlists were heavy on stuff I like).
The opening Rain King (with Raining in Baltimore) is lovely. Sullivan Street has the Runaway Girl alts. Murder of One has the Not Alone alts.

Uploading a bunch of videos from the 2008 show at Bowery Ballroom. I don't appear to have the complete show, but a lot of it. Will update this post as the videos finish processing. Here's the first one. Video is from multiple sources, but mixed with audio from a better tape. Thanks to all who contributed to this... they are listed in the description.
This was a great show... the band played a great first set (opening with Colorblind, a great Round Here, and a rare Raining in Baltimore that had me gasping). Then they returned and played most of the then new record (SNSM), with Adam telling the story behind each song.
(For these, the rest should start coming up as watch next on Youtube, or go to my channel to make a playlist.)

A complete webcast from 2003, when the Crows played the release party for AOL 9.0 (yes, that's a real thing that happened). AOL had run some ad making fun of Idaho, and so they put on a show there with the Crows headlining. If you didn't see them during this time, this is a pretty good representation of what the experience was like (down to the acoustic Rain King opener).

A bit of a show from 2004, shot from the photographer's pit. I can't confirm this, but I always assumed this was taped for possible use with the old fan club, Cloudkookooland - there's a couple like this, the shooter is set up so close, and it was around this time that they were putting up quite a bit of live content there.
Thanks to Rob for sharing this a number of years ago on CrowsTown.

Chris' Video Vault #21

Sometimes I'm stunned at what's not on Youtube. So much so that I assume it has to be one of the rights holders (record company, broadcaster, publishing company) blocking it. But hey, it's not that much work to upload a video and see...

And that's why I'm super happy to present to you the complete broadcast from Live at the 10 Spot, AKA disc two of Across a Wire, as aired by MTV in 1997.

Great show, of course. You all know that. Enjoy the video for the first time or relive it.

P.S. On pretty much all these videos, there's a copyright claim. What that means is that the claimant (usually publishing company) can put ads on the video and collect the revenue (which is fine by me, of course). In this case, the claimant has added it a "viewing restriction." As a result, according to Youtube, this might not show up on "some mobile devices, video game consoles, or set top boxes." I legit have no idea what this covers. So, if you go to watch this and can't, try another device, I guess?

The Crows on their first European tour, on Jools Holland's show. Parts of this (the interview and Anna Begins) were on Youtube before, but this adds a cool take on Mr. Jones. (I'll note that their 1997 performance on Jools Holland is also on Youtube, so I'm not uploading it, but it's worth seeing.)

EDIT: The BBC has blocked this one.

Chris' Video Vault #24
One more for today. I think this is underrated when we talk about the Crows' best shows - they're on, the crowd is amped, and towards the end are a couple of the more unique performances of their career (and I say this having listened to A LOT of tapes).
First, A Murder of One. Nice energy all the way through, but you've heard this before, right up to Adam singing I am not alone, which is always the end... except he looks at the crowd, which is losing its mind, and decides to keep going. He turns to the band and they go into "I will walk along the hillsides..." and you can see the band trying to figure out what he's doing and following along. Amazing. Killer way to end the main set.
Then, in the encore, a really cool version of Goodnight Elisabeth. First, there's California Dreamin' alt (very rare). But then Adam gets out of the last verse to go into It's Alright, which has happened a few times, but I believe this is our only video of it, and with the big crowd singing along, it turns into a really cool moment to finish the show.

Found some audience videos from a 2006 show in Houston. The video is nice - screen shots, quite clear. The audio, however, is pretty bad. Worth a try, I guess.

Sort of a continuation of a previous one - I found a separate video from Soundstage 2008 of only Round Here. I *think* a couple of videos got posted before they aired the show to promote it, and this is one of them (the other was You Can't Count on Me, which was the single at the time - that one was in the broadcast). Nice take with All I Need is You and HYSML? alts.

A complete webcast from the TDL tour, a two hour show from London. Great example of where the band was creatively at this point - lots of alts, including an odd one in Mercury about magic carpet rides, Thunder Road in Rain King, No Scrubs in Hanginaround, She Doesn't Exist Anymore in Round Here... fun stuff. Also really like the take on Oasis' Live Forever with Adam on piano, which they played a bit in 2000.
Also a great reminder in 2017, when webcasts are 1080p HD, of what webcasts in 2000 looked like. We've come a long way!

A complete pro shot show from the RTS tour. An amazing show, one of the best Crows videos we have. Includes an exceptional take on Raining in Baltimore, which used to be up on annabegins.com.
P.S. I removed the intro and outro music here, so you'll get silence at the beginning and end. Doing so meant no restrictions on viewing devices, so I felt that was worth it. Everything else is intact.

A wonderful compilation of the August record live, as made by Rob (the source for much of this video footage). Terrific stuff, even if he's totally wrong about the best versions of Rain King and Sullivan Street (there's no way Oh Susannah and Runaway Girl versions can be the top, but that's merely one man's opinion).
I tried to include Rob's full notes on this one, because they're great, but it was way over the character limit on Youtube. Will post them separately here.
P.S. Due to the inclusion of Ghost Train from Storytellers, this might not be available on all devices. If you get an issue trying to watch this, switch to another device.

Webcast of the Crows' performance at Farm Aid in 2007. Really cool set for being on a big bill - they open with Rain King with Thunder Road (this was when they'd just gone back to playing it electric after playing it acoustic exclusively for a few years... Adam talked at the time about how they realized Millard had never played electric Rain King). Murder of One has the Doris Day alts and is pretty heavy, and there's a lovely intro into a long take on A Long December to close it out. 40 minutes to play 5 songs.

Pieces of a couple of festival performances in Belgium, in 2000 and 2002. What's really exciting here is the Round Here from Marktrock, because it's the only performance of the Torn alt - yes, Natalie Imbruglia's Torn. It's kind of amazing in a really unexpected way. Like, you never thought about it being possible until you heard it and then it just sort of makes total sense. (Round Here starts at 14:40 in the video).

I'm heading to see the Crows at PNC in Jersey tonight, and here's a show from that same venue, 17 years ago this month. This is from a VCD of a webcast - so it's pretty nice for its age, but it's still a VCD of a webcast.
Adam is in a really great mood... this is, I believe, the period where he's very happy with the Amelia who'd be the inspiration for Miami (and a lot of the Hard Candy record). Love the sax on Another Horsedreamer's Blues. Ed from Live joins for Hanginaround. Adam plays Oasis' Live Forever before A Long December, and there's Thunder Road in Rain King.

Another complete audience recording from the RTS tour. Can't believe these shows are 20 years old. Setlist is standard for the tour but it does have Raining in Baltimore, which is always a gem.

A full show from Tulsa on the 2007 ballpark tour. I think it's a bit lost now, but this was a really refreshing tour - the band was playing new songs again and they were digging back into the catalog, too - this show has All My Friends and Perfect Blue Buildings (importantly, with the Sometimes it Snows in April alt), along with a fairly big dose of RTS.

Small piece of a show from 2004. Shot from a bit of a distance, so you can see what their stage setup looked like at the time. Particularly enjoy the bit in Rain King (which cuts in, so you can watch for a minute and see this) where Adam sings about how special Matt is (but not as special as Adam, of course). Thanks to Rob for this one.

About 30 minutes of an unknown show from 2004 (if someone could identify it, that would be cool). Has the acoustic version of St. Robinson that they used to do. and a somewhat unique take on the Someone to Watch Over Me alts (that someone watching the show talks over).

Complete performance from Pinkpop in 2008 (pieces of this have been on Youtube before, but not the whole thing). Interesting how they do Round Here with HYSML? as the alt and then follow it up with the original HYSML?

Some interview segments (from what appears to be the backstage of a festival?) about SNSM, but also more generally - what it's like to be in the band, and Adam's pickiness about live material being released on video.

A piece of a 2008 show in Charlotte that was used as promotional footage for the summer tour that year. Adam had hurt his knee, so he's on crutches here. Nicely, this doesn't feature the hits, but instead Up All Night, Speedway, and Rain King. There's also about fifteen minutes worth of interview footage with Adam, Immy, and Dan on the back end.

Some cool footage from the Concert at Sea festival put on by Blof in 2008. This version of Holiday in Spain has been on Youtube (and I do love the joint version with Blof, particularly Adam's backing vocals on the last part), but the take on Mr. Jones has not.
With that, that's all I have from this hard drive. I'll take another look for more video footage, but it'll probably be a bit before that happens (taking a vacation and then working on some other archival projects). Can't believe we got to 60, though!
