- Fuck the Underground

Taper: Unknown
Source: Unknown (hand held)
Conversion: Master (VHS) > VHS (unknown gen) > DVD
Shot: Audience (hand held)
Video: B-
Sound: B+

Comments:

Here we have the Crows during the 1994 AAEA tour. Adam and the boys appear to be in a very good mood
for this show, with Adam particularly shooting the lights out.

Cox family sit in on a number of tracks (violin and dobro) and really make an impression. Adam talks
about how he is looking forward to playing a lot of new songs (elisabeth, margery)

Video only get a B- on this one due to the constant obstructions and shaking. When it is focused and
unobstructed, the actual picture is fine. There is a lot of shaking and a lot of “black outs” that are
audio only. The taper spends a lot of time getting into position during the first song.

Another VHS from the underground, unearthed for your satisfaction.

Beacon Theatre
12.02.96 - DVD

"2 Disc Deluxe Edition"

The infamous Beacon Theatre show where Adam fell and hurt his knee early in
the set. Dan had to step up to the plate and sing "Wiseblood" while the knee
was being attended to. This is one of the most professionally packaged AUD
shot dvd's I have seen. Awesome menu's (with music), great layout and the
quality of the filming is great. Get this while you can. It is awesome
(trust me).

Comments:

The famous yet rare 1999 Shim Sham Show. Audio from this
show, presumably from the video source has started to slowly
circulate, however the video has yet to see the light of day. This
is an audience shot DVD, with good sound and vision. The show features
first time performances of MPL, Four Days and some since unplayed covers -
"Never Go Back", "When I win the Lottery", "Blue Eyes Cryin In The Rain",
"Johnny Thunder" and "Always on My Mind".

Audio versions of this gig have circulated, albeit in a different setlist
order from what is listed here. Rest assured that this is the correct
setlist in the correct order from a reliable source.

There has been a lot of speculation over the years that adam had said
he was really drunk and therefore did not want this show traded. In
more recent times, he has rarely mentioned the show itself, or his
opinion on it being traded. The video is a relatively good audience shot,
from somewhere above stage. For all the hype, the shopw is actually a
little middel of the road - nothing spectacular but interesting all the
same.

I note that while there has been an alleged embargo on trading the show,
audio tracks of "Blue Eyes Cryin In The Rain" and "When I Win The Lottery"
have been available at annabegins.com (sister site to countingcrows.com) for
many many years.

here it is, shim sham 1999. the show. the myth. the marvel.

Comments:

Another previously “unreleased” audience recording, this time in New Orleans. Crows had just finished (or were about to finish) touring with Live, and Adam talks about how much he just loves New Orleans.

The band are in great form, with Immy and Dan trading riffs like they were born to do just that. It is the guitars that really stand out on this show for me.

Cutis Watson sits in on “Round Here”, “Anna Begins” and “Hanginaround” playing trumpet, and seems really into it. “Anna Begins” has some crazy alt that I had never heard before, and is truly mesmerizing. Adam gives his gf a big kiss at the beginning of Hanginaround.

The video itself is shot from somewhere left of stage, and considering the obstructions (the proshot rig) is very good overall. There are some out of focus parts, but on the whole, this is a great video of an amazing show.

This show was also recorded as a Proshot, but as yet, only a couple of tracks (Round here & IWIWAG) have surfaced (on Live Vol 8).

Comments:

A very nice 2002 gig from the Irving Plaza, NY. Hard Candy had just been released & it was
“doing really well” according to Adam et al. The video on this one is pretty good, which makes
me think that VHS is definitely NOT the original source, rather a DV Cam or something similar
(I don’t have all the details). The sound is also very good on this one too. It is shot from
somewhere above left of stage, and (like all audience shots) has some period where it is either
not in focus, blocked or disturbed somehow. All in all, a very watchable show.

Highlights are “Round Here” with amazing electricity alts, and the closing tune – Sullivan Street.
This is another one of those video’s only watched by those on the “inner circle” or who are part of
the underground.

Unearthed, for your viewing pleasure.

This show was Dave Bryson’s birthday…………….

A pretty cool audience shot DVD here from the good folks at UMASS. There has been no VHS
conversion of this one that I know of. Sound and video are both very watchable, and you
can really feel the enthusiasm of the crowd. There is some occasional obstruction from
other audience members, but all in all it is filmed really tight on the stage, from somewhere
left. There is some occasional pixilation (when the strobes are flashing).

The show was a cracker. Opening with “Mrs Potter’s” became the trademark of this tour,
and tonight was no exception. “Elisabeth” became a huge crowd sing-along, and “Miami”
really shot the lights out and “Oh Susanna” alts kicks some ass, plain and simple. The
band are completely on song (another trademark of the “Hard Candy” tour).

I have no idea of the origin, taper etc of this one. I can only assume that this hasn’t
circulated, because I have never seen it, and the person who sent it to me has said that
they have never traded it.

It’s another unearthed Counting Crows treat for y’all………….enjoy.
