Off the top of my head, I can think of the following whom I really like:

Dave Eggers
Richard Powers
Stewart O'Nan
Raymond Carver
John Irving
Edith Wharton
Sylvia Plath
Rainer Maria Rilke

Oh, and I love Stephen King's Dark Tower series and JKR's Harry Potter. I love those epic, not quite realistic stories - although I must admit, I never got through the Lord of the Rings, though I tried several times in both German and English ...
