Theater chain cutting down on popcorn
« on: October 13, 2008, 09:16:41 AM »

LONDON, Aug 10, 2008 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Officials with Britain's Picturehouse Cinema theater chain say the art-house group will begin offering popcorn-free screenings at their theaters.
Picturehouse official Gabriel Swartland said the snack food's messy and noisy presence in the group's theaters has become a point of so many complaints that the theater group decided to create specialized screenings starting next month, The Mail on Sunday reported.
"Popcorn is a contentious issue," Swartland said. "Lots of people absolutely hate it and have asked us to ban it, so we're going to do exactly that."
Such gastronomical issues even have some theater owners like Daniel Broch banning the snack food altogether, the Mail said.
"I will de-popcorn every new venue I acquire," Broch, owns 18 theaters, told the newspaper. "It has a disproportionate influence on the space in terms of its overwhelming smell, the cultural idea of it and the operational problems created by the mess it produces."

I can't say I blame him. The sound of people eating popcorn is awful!
