« on: November 04, 2008, 08:25:04 PM »
As a rule i just ask Bob :D but i thought i would give you all the chance to help the second biggest computer retard on these boards !

Any idea of a quick way to convert my lovely lossless FLAC files to mp3 files to play on my mp3 player , a bit of free software wouldnt be a bad idea !

I can convert them to WAV then mp3 but i wanted to cut out the middleman :chuckle:

I really like dBpoweramp's music converter for anything like this.  The download is free, although I believe you have to pay for a license for the mp3 encoder.  The FLAC codec is not included in the initial download, but is free to add.  I paid for the nicer version of the software with more bells and whistles (still only $36) and haven't regretted it at all.  http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm

Being even lazier I upgraded the Firmware on my I-Pod to Rockbox it plays the flacs with no recoding or the like, what I lose in disk space (I have a 20Gb) I gain in ease of use

Do you notice a loss of battery life?  My understanding is that larger files (definitely FLACs) tend to limit your music time on the hard drive models.

I have an older model and get six hours consistently, I haven't noticed and difference, to be fair as it's mostly concerts I don't jump around from track to track a alot. It will play mp3, wav and shn easlily, the only thing I've found it won't play though it is supported bythe software are .ape files again i think it's an age thing

I use a Cowon Iaudio - it's base firmware plays FLACs. I have the X5, although I'm not sure they still make it.

Foobar 2000....you can also tag FLAC files with it.  Will convert 24bit FLACs to 16bit MP3s as well.

PS
Rockbox is the best.  I have used it for 2 years both taping and playing files on my iRiver.  It is my goto device.

well thanks for all your help , it is tempting just to leave the music in FLAC form in its pure quality sound , but i dont think it matters that much when listening on my mp3 player on a train or plane , so i will be going for quantity over quality .
